Two diets with identical total calories but very different macro splits can produce meaningfully different results, particularly during a calorie deficit. A few macro myths persist despite limited evidence: that carbohydrates inherently cause fat gain (they do not — total calorie surplus does, regardless of source); that fat should be minimised as much as possible (a meaningful floor is important for hormonal health); and that there is one universally optimal macro ratio for everyone (individual response, training goals, and personal adherence all reasonably shift what split works best for a given person). Another persistent myth is that eating protein late at night is somehow “wasted” or converted to fat — total daily protein intake matters far more than the specific timing of when it is consumed, and there is no meaningful evidence that protein eaten in the evening behaves differently from protein eaten earlier in the day for most people.
Reading Nutrition Labels for Macros
UK nutrition labels list calories, fat (and saturates), carbohydrate (and sugars), fibre, protein and salt per 100g and typically per serving, making it reasonably straightforward to build a macro picture from packaged food once you know your daily targets. A useful habit is checking the “per serving” figures against how much you actually plan to eat, since packaged portions (a bag of crisps, a ready meal) do not always match a single realistic serving, and it is easy to under-count intake by assuming the whole package is one portion when the label is based on a smaller stated serving size.
Supplements and Macros

How Macros Relate to Overall Diet Quality
Hitting specific macro targets is a useful structural tool, but it is not the same thing as overall diet quality. Two eating patterns can hit identical macro numbers while differing enormously in micronutrient content, fibre, and how satisfying and sustainable they feel — a day built around whole foods (lean meats, vegetables, wholegrains, fruit) versus a day built largely around processed, macro-matched convenience foods. Treat macro targets as a useful framework sitting alongside, not instead of, broader principles of eating a varied, minimally processed diet with plenty of vegetables and fruit.
