What Is BMI?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple screening measure calculated from height and weight alone, using the formula: BMI = weight in kilograms ÷ (height in metres)². What Affects Your BMI Beyond Diet and Exercise
While diet and activity are the main levers most people think of when it comes to changing BMI, several other factors influence the number in ways worth understanding. Hydration status can shift body weight, and therefore BMI, by a kilogram or more within a single day, which is why weighing yourself at a consistent time (first thing in the morning, before eating or drinking, after using the bathroom) gives a more comparable reading over time than weighing at random points in the day. Medications including some antidepressants, corticosteroids, and certain diabetes treatments can affect body weight as a side effect, independent of diet or exercise changes. Frequently Overlooked Point: BMI Says Nothing About Trend
