What Is TDEE?
Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) is the total number of calories your body burns in a typical 24-hour period — everything from keeping your organs running to digesting your lunch to the steps you take walking to your car. It is the single most useful number in calorie planning, because every meaningful calorie goal (losing fat, gaining muscle, or simply maintaining your current weight) is defined relative to it.
TDEE is built from four components:

How This Calculator Estimates Your TDEE

Choosing the Right Activity Level (Where Most People Go Wrong)

Why TDEE Estimates Drift Over Time

Take the 35-year-old man from our BMR example — 178 cm, 85 kg, with an estimated BMR of roughly 1,793 kcal/day. If he works a desk job and exercises moderately three to four times a week (“Moderately Active,” multiplier 1.55), his estimated TDEE is 1,793 × 1.55 ≈ 2,779 kcal/day. If instead he has a physically active job on top of that same exercise routine (“Active,” multiplier 1.725), his estimated TDEE rises to 1,793 × 1.725 ≈ 3,093 kcal/day — a difference of over 300 calories driven entirely by the activity-level selection, which is exactly why choosing the right multiplier honestly matters so much for the accuracy of your result.
Understanding NEAT: The Most Underrated Piece of TDEE
Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (NEAT) — all the incidental movement in a day that is not formal exercise — is one of the most variable and most underestimated components of total daily calorie burn. It covers everything from the steps taken walking around an office, to standing versus sitting, to fidgeting, to the physical demands of a manual job versus a desk job. Research on NEAT has found it can vary by several hundred to over a thousand calories per day between two people of similar size and formal exercise habits, based purely on how much they move throughout the rest of the day. This is a large part of why two people who “exercise the same amount” can have meaningfully different real TDEEs, and why the activity-level categories in a TDEE calculator are necessarily a simplification of something genuinely complex happening throughout your entire day, not just during a workout.
TDEE for Specific Populations
Standard TDEE formulas and activity multipliers are built from general adult population data and work reasonably well for most healthy adults, but a few groups tend to see larger gaps between formula-predicted and real TDEE. Highly muscular individuals often have a higher real TDEE than Mifflin–St Jeor-based estimates suggest, since the formula does not directly account for unusually high muscle mass. Older adults, particularly those who have lost significant muscle mass, sometimes have a somewhat lower real TDEE than a formula would predict for their age, height and weight alone. How Often Should You Recalculate TDEE?
As a general rule, recalculate whenever one of the underlying inputs changes meaningfully: after a weight change of roughly 4–5 kg in either direction, after a genuine change in activity level (a new job, starting or stopping a regular training programme), or simply every 2–3 months as a routine check-in during an active diet or gaining phase.
