Methodology

Built on Published Formulas, Not Guesswork

Every calculator on Calorie Check is built around a named, peer-reviewed or widely validated method — not an internal black-box formula. Our BMR and TDEE tools use the Mifflin–St Jeor equation, generally recognised in clinical and sports-nutrition literature as more accurate across a wider range of body types than older formulas like Harris-Benedict. Our BMI tool uses the standard WHO classification bands. Our restaurant calculators are built the same way every nutrition label is: by summing verified per-item values as you add them to a basket.

We show our working. Every calculator page explains the formula used, states its assumptions plainly, and tells you when a result should be treated as a rough guide rather than a precise number — because that's the honest answer for anything based on population averages.

None of this replaces individual medical or dietetic advice. Bodies vary, and formulas built on averages will always be a starting estimate rather than a diagnosis. Where a result carries extra uncertainty — like a very aggressive calorie deficit — the calculator tells you so, rather than silently returning a number that could be unsafe to follow.

1

Named formulas

Mifflin–St Jeor for BMR/TDEE, WHO bands for BMI, standard g/kg protein targets for macros — never a hidden proprietary formula.

2

Clear assumptions

Every result page states what the number does and doesn't account for, so you can judge how much to rely on it.

3

Safety checks built in

Deficit and surplus targets are flagged automatically if they fall outside commonly recommended, sustainable ranges.

Common Questions

Are these calorie calculators free to use?

Yes. Every calculator is completely free, runs directly in your browser, and does not require an account or email address.

How accurate are the results?

Our calculators use established, published formulas (such as Mifflin–St Jeor for BMR/TDEE and WHO bands for BMI). They provide reliable estimates based on population data, but individual metabolism, medical conditions and body composition can shift real-world numbers. Treat results as an informed starting point, not a diagnosis.

Do you store any of my personal data?

No. Calculations run entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Your age, weight, height and other inputs are never sent to or stored on our servers. See our Privacy Policy for full details.

Are the restaurant calculators affiliated with the restaurants themselves?

No. Our restaurant-specific calculators are independently built using publicly available and estimated nutrition data for general guidance. They are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by the restaurant brands referenced. Always check official in-venue or app-based nutrition information before making decisions related to allergies or medical conditions.
